DP Theme Day: The Color Red

Red Balloon in Stayton Oregon

It's that time again... the City Daily Photo theme day. This month's theme is "the color red."

My photo is of a balloon, but you probably already knew that. The balloon was whipping around outside Postal Connections. I did a "cutout" and made the background black and white so the red of the balloon would stand out.

A whole bunch of other DP bloggers are also doin' the red, so give 'em a look:

You did a great job with the "cut-out"--I'll have to learn how to do that. Is it part of photoshop?

Wonderful! Great treatment of the photograph. Reminds me of a film (French I think?) about a boy with a red balloon.

Kate, I don't have Photoshop, so I don't how do it in that program.

I used Paint Shop Pro, selected the red of the balloon, then converted the rest to black and white. I'm sure there are better ways to do it, as selecting the red was tedious using the magic wand tool.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. It was fun effect to do.

I use Paintshop pro too and that magic wand can be a bit tricky to use.

What?! Does no one else have the 80's song "99 Red Balloons" running through their head after seeing this?? I don't believe I could be the only one!

Great shot - love the sheer simplicity of it.

I really like the effect you've created here. I have another special reason for liking this shot though - the name of my business is The Red Balloon Craft Junction (www.redballoon.co.za), so anything with red balloons always attracts my attention! :)

Reminds me of the kids film about a little lad & his red balloon. Or the song by Nena.

And it does standout. I have not tried a cutout and will have to give the technique a try.

Very nice. I like when an object is left in color on a black and white backround. Awesome!
