It Was In Stayton

It Was In Stayton - a plaque in front of Jordan Bridge in Stayton Oregon

In front of my favorite Stayton landmark, The Jordan Bridge, are various plaques commemorating the bridge and what was done to get the thing transplanted from one location to another. The above picture shows part of one of the plaques.

And, strangely enough (since I usually forget this sort of thing), I actually have the text of the sign, which you will find below. Because that's where it is.
The Jordan Covered Bridge

Built in 1937 over Thomas Creek, Linn County, it was dismantled in 1985 and stored in Stayton.

In 1986, the Marine Corps agreed to help and this location was chosen. Replacing deteriorated wood as they went, Jordan Bridge Company volunteers and the Marines reassembled the bridge. The shake roof and the rounded portals reflect the original construction.

This is the first full-size covered bridge in Oregon to be dismantled, moved, and reassembled. The project received an award from the US Department of Transportation and the Council on Historic Preservation.

June 1988.

It is my understanding that the Marines want to dismantle it again and move it to Iraq.

The only hangups are they are unsure it will completely span the Euphrates River and local competing factions are already suicide bombing each other to see who gets control of the bridge.

Didn't they leave out the part where the bridge burned down and was replaced? That was pretty exciting...

(I grew up more or less right across the street there.)

Steve: as long as they don't bomb the bridge. It's been through enough. :)

solipsistnation: it's not mentioned on that sign, but there is a sign on the bridge itself which mentions it. It says:

Stayton-Jordan Bridge
Built 1998
Replacing Jordan Bridge Lost To Fire 1994
