The Brown House

The Brown House in Stayton Oregon

I posted a photo last year of the Historic Charles and Martha Brown House, a historic home on 1st Ave. which is undergoing renovation. I thought it might be interesting to do an updated photo to show the progress on the outside of the home.

For background info on the house, please see the post from last year.

The Strangest TV I Ever Did See

The Strangest TV I Ever Did See - a green television utility box in Stayton Oregon

Although, now that I think about it, it does have about the same entertainment value. ;)

This must be a utility box of some sort, but I've never seen one like it before. But then again, I don't pay a lot of attention to those things. It was in an area where they're building a bunch of new homes off of Santiam St.

A Community In Need

A Community In Need - The Stayton Community Food Bank in Stayton Oregon

Stayton Community Food Bank in Stayton OregonI've heard recently that the Oregon area food banks are in desperate need of donations right now, so I thought it a good time to highlight Stayton's food bank, just off of 3rd Ave., on E Ida St. It's a worthy cause -- we all have to eat -- so please consider donating to your area food bank.

A Friendly Warning

A Friendly Warning - a Danger: High Voltage sign at the power sub-station in Stayton Oregon

This sign can be seen hanging out at the power sub-station on Fern Ridge Rd. I must confess I didn't do any field testing to see if the sign is, in fact, telling the truth. I'm perfectly happy to take it on faith.

Outstanding In Its Field

Outstanding In Its Field - a tree at Neitling Park in Stayton Oregon

This is a tree. A fairly large tree. It's standing in a field. The field is part of Neitling Park. Wow.

Sorry. It's not always easy coming up with captions. I suppose I could make something up. Like the tree is really a space alien come to take over Stayton, and that all the other trees in town are in cahoots, and one day soon we'll all be woken up by tree roots and limbs creeping and reaching into our houses and taking over our lives, forcing us humans to be their watering and fertilizing minions.

Or maybe I shouldn't. After all, what if I'm right? What if, at this very moment, the trees in town are reading this and are plotting against me? My yard has a lot of trees in it. I'm literally surrounded. So I'll just keep quiet. It's better that way.

A Shy Way About Her (Or Him)

A Shy Way About Her (Or Him) - a scarecrow decoration in Stayton Oregon

I spotted this scarecrow decoration hanging out at the Lone Oak Cemetery a couple of days ago. She (or he) was shy at first and would only face away from my camera. It took a bit of coaxing for her (or him) to turn around. As you can see in the photo, she (or he) was still shy about having her (or his) picture taken.

Love Oregon?

Love Oregon? Signs in a building on 3rd Avenue in Stayton Oregon

This building on 3rd Avenue is decked out for the political holidays, so to speak, for an upcoming ballot measure. I'm not advocating for or against the measure, I just thought the building was cool. It was built in 1912, and is "the only concrete stone building in Stayton retaining original entrys and display windows," according to the Stayton-Sublimity Chamber of Commerce web site. I don't know what it's used for now... looks like storage at the moment.

Back In Time

Back In Time - 3rd Avenue in the historic downtown area of Stayton Oregon

I took this shot of 3rd Avenue the other day while standing in front of City Hall, and it just kinda felt like the scene was from another time. So I fiddled with it to give it an aged look to fit what I felt the mood to be. Just, ya know, ignore all those modern cars and such in the photo, 'kay? :)

Wide Open Spaces

Wide Open Spaces - A field and trees in Stayton Oregon

I like today's photo for what isn't there... a house, business, or other structure that might take away or obscure the beauty of the trees, the field, and the sky.

Technically, there is a road running through the picture (Wilco Rd.), and sign is visible, but both are barely noticeable, so let's not quibble over details.

From The Earth

From The Earth - Graffiti on train cars in Stayton Oregon

A string of train cars were parked on the tracks which run alongside Locust St. yesterday. The cars had graffiti marked with a variety of dates and locations, like the one above. I think it's kinda cool I found this one two years to the day it was created, apparently in or around Minneapolis, Minnesota (visit two Minneapolis daily photo blogs -- Minneapolis Daily Photo and Dusty Lens).

Click here for more of my photos of the train cars.

Texaco - a gas station in Stayton Oregon

Here's a completely random photo of a gas station on 1st Ave. Oddly enough, this is actually the second time I've posted a photo of this gas station. I don't know why. This photo is completely different, in that it's the other side of the station. Yep. Totally, utterly different.

Way Over Yonder

Way Over Yonder - looking out over town in Stayton Oregon

Today's photo was taken from the cemetery on 3rd, which sits on a hill. It affords probably the best view out over town... what little you can see of it, that is. There are a bazillion (more or less) trees in Stayton, so the view is mostly blocked.

The tall lights visible are from the one of the high school's football field, though I''m not sure which one. The hill is outside of town somewhere. That line running diagonally is a telephone wire. The photo was taken near sunset.

Say Goodbye To Summer - a black-eyed susan flower in Stayton Oregon

I guess summer really is over. The last vestiges of a once beautiful black-eyed susan flower pay testament to the passing of the season.

More From The Oregon Covered Bridge Festival

A pony at the Oregon Covered Bridge Festival in Stayton Oregon

I attended the final day of the Oregon Covered Bridge Festival yesterday, and took a few more photos. The pony pictured above was pulling a little buggy which was giving folks rides around the festival.

Oregon Covered Bridge Festival 2007

Oregon Covered Bridge Festival 2007 in Stayton Oregon

Yesterday I attended the first day of the two-day Oregon Covered Bridge Festival at Pioneer Park. The photos above show a pony which was pulling a buggy, Ty Curtis of the awesome Ty Curtis Band, some work gloves of an artificer (craftsperson), and a red-tailed hawk from the Birds of Prey exhibit.

Check out my Flickr photoset of the event for more photos.

As an aside, I was standing in line for food at the festival and a teenage girl asked if I was taking photos for the newspaper. I told her no, it was for a blog. "What's a blog?" she asked, and she seemed to truly not know. I forget not everyone knows what a blog is, especially a teenager.

Ever Faithful

Ever Faithful - a playground toy at Northslope Park in Stayton Oregon

This cute creature hangs out at the playground at Northslope Park off of Fern Ridge Rd. He doesn't talk much, but he's always there if you need him. I like that in a playground toy... even if I'm too, um, grown up (so to speak) to ride the little guy.

Reflection Of Life

Reflection Of Life - post office boxes in Stayton Oregon

I had to go to the post office yesterday, so I took a minute to take a picture of the post office boxes which live in a little alcove in the lobby. The colors in the glass are from a covered bridge mural painted on the front window of the post office.

I took a similar shot last year of the post office boxes, though both are different in a lot of ways.

Back Alley

Back Alley in Stayton Oregon

There's an alley way which runs midway between 1st Ave. and 2nd Ave. for a few blocks, near the north end of town. I don't know why it's there... never thought about it before, actually.

I don't think there are other alleys anywhere in Stayton, though I could be wrong. I'm just a veritable font of non-information today, aren't I? That's not exactly unusual, of course. Such is my life. ;)

Regis High School

Regis High School in Stayton Oregon

Behind these trees is part of Regis Catholic High School on Regis St. This is looking at it from across part of a large field next to the school, part of which is used for
little league baseball.

This road is one of my favorite places to take photos of clouds, because it's so open.

For Which It Stands - an American flag in Stayton Oregon

I'm posting this image of an American flag in honor of the 6th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, tragedy.

May we never forget what happened, and may we remember those who gave their lives that day.

Tenant/Customer Parking Only

Tenant/Customer Parking Only - a weather-beaten shed in Stayton Oregon

This is a side wall of a weather-beaten shed behind a restaurant on 2nd Ave. The sign marks the area as 'tenant/customer parking only'... but the sign was facing a small gravel area overrun with weeds, so I'm not entirely sure who would park there.

I have another view of the shed's peeling paint here.

Superfresh - green apples in a Safeway grocery store in Stayton Oregon

Make Me Cry - yellow onions in a Safeway grocery store in Stayton OregonToday's photo is of some of the fresh (or as the tags on them say, superfresh) green apples at the Safeway grocery store. And because I'm feeling extra generous, at right is yet another photo of produce in the form of onions. Isn't this exciting?

Get A Load Of Those Melons - watermelons in a Safeway grocery store in Stayton OregonBut wait, that's not all. I've also included a photo of watermelons at no extra charge. Click on the thumbnails to take advantage of this one-time offer. You have to act now, because this offer... well, it will still be here later, in the site archives.

Eh. Sorry. I've seen too many TV commercials. Oh, don't forget to visit my newly started personal photoblog, Photos By Celine. It has photos you won't find here, and some you will.

Crocus In Focus

Crocus In Focus - purple fall crocus flowers in Stayton Oregon

I was wandering around Lone Oak Cemetery yesterday evening, when I spotted this little group of fall crocus. So I took pictures. Which is why I was wandering around in the first place.

Speaking of taking pictures, for no apparent reason I can discern, I've started another photoblog called (and here's where I get really clever) Photos By Celine. It will have photos not published here and some that are. It's focus isn't on Stayton, but on my photography in general. For whatever that's worth.

A couple of other views of the crocus:

Farm Fields

Farm Fields in Stayton Oregon

These are some farm fields, looking past Highway 22 where it meets Fern Ridge Rd. There are a lot of rural areas outside of Stayton's city limits, as these fields (just barely) are.

I wish I could photograph more of them, but my little scooter isn't allowed, as it doesn't go fast enough to be on those roads. I took this one from some distance away.

The Wall

The Wall - a mural wall outside of Stayton Elementary School in Stayton Oregon

Today's the first day of school in Stayton... which has suddenly made me realize I graduated from high school 15 years ago and I am officially old. Anyway, the photo above is a portion of a mural wall surrounding a small amphitheater at Stayton Elementary School.

I featured another part of the mural in June of last year.

Barely Contained

Barely Contained - a Porsche convertible in Stayton Oregon

This pretty little thing was sitting in the Safeway grocery store parking lot yesterday. It's apparently a Porsche of some variety or other... possibly a 356 from the 1950's, but I'm honestly not sure about that. If anyone out there knows, please leave a comment. Thanks.

Whatever kind of car it is, it's beautiful and I want one.

DP Theme Day: Street Lights And Signs

Tree-Themed Street Sign Mosaic - street signs in Stayton Oregon

Today is the theme day here in City Daily Photo land, and this month it's "street lights and signs." Stayton has but a few street lights, so I decided to go with signs, instead.

Stayton has quite a few tree-oriented street signs (my theme day photo has its own theme... gosh, that's exciting). The mosaic above shows a portion of such signs, but there are more.

And, yes, I know 'evergreen' isn't a tree, but since the vast majority of the trees in town are of the evergreen variety, I felt it should be included.

A Window in Portland Oregon - photo taken by Lynette HansonUpdate!

Lynette Hanson, a Portland resident who's thinking of starting a Portland daily photo blog (go for it, Lynette!), has sent me a contribution to today's theme day. It shows some street lights being reflected in a window on SW 3rd and Washington. Please click on the image at right to see the bigger version of the photo.

I hope Lynette does become a DP blogger... she'd make a great addition. You can also visit her non-DP blog.
