Over The Edge

(See also: color version of photo)
I went on a day trip yesterday with my friend Steve to Silver Fall State Park, which is about 17 miles from Stayton. The both of us lugged our camera equipment around and saw three of the waterfalls at the park. That means you're going to be seeing waterfalls for the next few days. :)
Today's photo is of South Falls, an awesome waterfall which has a walking path that goes directly behind it. I took said path and promptly felt like I'd just taken a very cold shower. I didn't get any decent photos from back there, though. Too much water spray on the lens.
As a side note, I freely admit I stole my black and white processing technique from Steve's amazing shot of South Falls. Go check his out while you're here.

love this as a B&W it really brings a great mood to photo over the color original
I will have to revisit some of my water shoots to how a B&W conversion works with them
beautiful...
This will sound silly but the best thing about this image is that the waterfall in not overexposed. That is fundamentally important in a black and white.
The water must be 2 or 3 f/stops brighter than it's surroundings. That makes it very difficult to get a good exposure for the overall image. If you meter for the surroundings the waterfall will be hopelessly overexposed, particularly at the top and bottom where it is brightest.
But it isn't. That is because you exposed it properly to start with and did not destroy that exposure in post processing.
Great job!
If they all look as good as this, I don't mind coming back!

One of the most photographed NW images, and still I don't get tired of it. I like the black and white.
This is just great! Prefer the black and white version.
This is so very pretty! Wow - it has been years since I visited these falls. I always thought it was the most amazing thing to be able to walk behind the falls. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories.
