Defining Boundaries

Defining Boundaries - a wire fence in Stayton Oregon

This is the edge of a field where N 9th Ave. and E. Virginia St. meet. It always makes me happy to see fields with big trees around. I think this one is part of a farm.

By the way, be sure to tune back in tomorrow for the September 1st City Daily Photo theme day. Each month's theme days are always big events, with well over 100 of the CDP blogs around the world participating.

For All The World To See

For All The World To See - a bridge in Stayton Oregon

Today's photo (I don't know why I start with that... really, why would I start off talking about yesterday's, or even last week's? Okay, maybe I would.) is of a bridge. I like bridges. This particular bridge sits on the south end of town -- either just outside or just inside city limits (not sure) -- on Stayton-Scio Rd., and spans the Santiam River.

Stayton Sand & Gravel

Knife River - at Stayton Sand & Gravel in Stayton Oregon

I took a very brief trip across the bridge south of town which spans the Santiam River (I can't go any further than that, since my scooter can't do the speed limit on that road).

The above photo shows part of Stayton Sand & Gravel. I haven't a clue what this particular machine does. Unless it's more than one machine. Dunno. I just think it/they/whatever is cool looking. :)

Opening September 3rd

Opening September 3rd - used book store in Stayton Oregon

The Stayton Friends of the Library group will be opening a used book store on September 3rd. It will be sharing space with Art Gone Wild at 349 N. 3rd Ave. I am such a happy camper. Stayton's been without a used book store for many years, so I really hope this effort succeeds.

You can read more about it at StaytonEvents.com. Good luck to those who will be running the store, and I hope everyone supports it so it can continue for many years to come.

Video Lottery - a yellow door in Stayton Oregon

I'm a dork. I took this picture in an alley behind some businesses, but failed to go around front to see which business this door belongs to. And I don't have another photo to post for today, so I'm kinda stuck. Like I said, I'm a dork. It may be the back door for Apizza. Then again, it may not. Whichever business it is, it's on 3rd Ave.

Stayton Public Library Panorama & Photosynth

Stayton Public Library Panorama in Stayton Oregon

Click here to view a Photosynth of the above scene!

Click here to view the panorama in a much larger size!

This is a panorama of the front of the public library and the surrounding area, which mainly consists of a parking lot. If you click on the links above, you can see both the Photosynth (a quasi-3D environment using photos) plus the large size of the panorama.

Jordan Bridge (Again)

Jordan Bridge (Again) in Stayton Oregon

Click here to view a Photosynth based on this scene! (Windows-based machines only)

Yesterday I posted a shot of a small power canal, and linked to an accompanying Photosyth I created of the area around the canal. It makes a quasi-3D environment by automatically converting a series of overlapping photos into a virtual space where one can click around to see various views of a scene.

I've created a new Photosynth which shows Jordan Bridge, a bit of Pioneer Park (where the bridge resides) and across the street to Neitling Park. This is again a very basic usage of capabilities of Photosynth. I intend to explore it more so I can create fuller environments.

I've also created a panorama based on the images I used for the Photosynth. Click below to see it much larger:

Jordan Bridge Panorama

Obviously, it's not really curved like that, but so it goes with panoramas.

Stayton Canal

Stayton Canal in Stayton Oregon

I've posted pictures of this little power canal between 3rd and 4th Ave. before (here's one, and another, but this time I wanted to try something a little different.

If you have a windows-based computer, you should be able to view a Photosynth I made for the area around the canal. It's kind of like a panorama, but it takes individual photos and displays them in a quasi-3D environment. You will need to install a small plug-in to view the Photosynth. click here to view the it (I tried to use its embed feature, but it didn't display properly).

This was my first time trying this, so it's not perfect. I plan on doing it for other areas around town, as I learn more about how best to do it.

My Photos On Display At Weddle Funeral Home

My Photos On Display in Stayton Oregon

I was recently asked by Randy Durig, new owner of Weddle Funeral Home, if he could purchase some of my photography prints to put on display in a new community-oriented flex/meeting room in a building adjacent to the funeral home. It is Randy's aim to highlight local work and to be more involved in the Stayton community. The flex room is available for non-profit use at no cost.

It was an honor to be asked to have my photography on display, so of course I said yes.

Five of my photos can be seen in the flex room, each of which have been posted here at some point -- Over The Edge, Lead On, Time Waits, Enter Night, and Just A Sprinkle (the one on display is actually a reshoot of this photo).

Thank you to Randy and the staff at Weddle's for being so kind, and for this amazing opportunity.

The Center Of All Creation

The Center Of All Creation - a garden spider in Stayton Oregon

I Like Big Butts - a garden spider in Stayton OregonSpiders are everywhere right now, especially in my yard, which has a lot of trees and bushes. Garden spiders such as the one in this photo are all over the place, to the point where I can't walk outside without having to duck and weave to avoid them. I don't always succeed. A few minutes after I took this photo, I walked right into the web. The spider was fine, but his web was a goner. I felt terrible.

The photo at right is the same little dude, this time as a macro.

With One Eye Open - a run down building in Stayton Oregon

This is a small building attached to the back of what was once Porter TV & Appliance. It's a cool little building, and always catches my eye whenever I pass by it.

The building faces E. Marion St., near 3rd Ave.

Sunrise Down On The Farm

Sunrise Down On The Farm in Stayton Oregon

Okay, so it's been raining the last few days. That means I haven't been able to go out on my scooter and take photos. It also means I'm posting a somewhat similar shot to one I posted a couple of days ago (it was taken at the same time).

It's the same farm, the same hay bales, etc., but this time I pointed the camera at the sunrise.

Breaking Through

Breaking Through - sunrise in Stayton Oregon

As I mentioned yesterday, I was out and about for a bit early Sunday morning, right around sunrise time. I caught the above sight just off of 10th Ave. I wish I'd had my tripod with me... it would have meant a lot less digital noise. Oh well.

Hay, Hay, Hay

Hay, Hay, Hay - hay bales in a farm field in Stayton Oregon

This field is technically just outside of Stayton, on Fern Ridge Rd., just across Highway 22. I'd been hoping to find a field with hay bales in it before the season was over, so I was rather happy to find this yesterday morning.

The photo was taken at around sunrise so I had to lighten it a fair amount. It's been way to hot for me to go out during the day. It's supposed to cool down this week, so hopefully I'll be able to go take more photos when it's actually light out.

Gardner House Bed And Breakfast

Gardner House Bed And Breakfast in Stayton Oregon

This is the historic A.D. Gardner House, built in 1898. It's presently a bed and breakfast, plus they've added a new cafe to the front. I haven't been there yet, but their menu makes me drool just reading it.

I've posted a photo of the house once before, as it sits right next to where the town's Christmas tree sits each December.

More From The Santiam Historical Museum

Stayton Ore. - at the Santiam Historical Museum in Stayton Oregon

January 1946 - at the Santiam Historical Museum in Stayton Oregon(View more photos from the museum!)

Today is day two (see also: day one) of my visit to the Santiam Historical Museum on 2nd Ave.

The photo above is of a patch on the shoulder of a jacket. The photo at right shows a calendar from what was once a local business, dated January 1946. How cool is that?

I've posted several more photos to the Flickr photoset I've created, so I hope you'll take a few minutes and stroll through it. The museum has some truly interesting items. I didn't get all of them photographed, though, so if you're in the area, be sure to visit.

Once again, the museum's information:

230 2nd Ave.
Stayton, OR 97383
(503) 769-1406

Hours: 1-4pm Saturdays

I hope those in the Stayton area can find some time to visit and support the museum. It's definitely a worthy cause.

Thanks again to Evelyn Fuson for showing me around the museum and answering my questions. It's greatly appreciated.

A Visit To The Santiam Historical Museum

Old Photographs at Santiam Historical Museum in Stayton Oregon

Evelyn Fuson at Santiam Historical Museum in Stayton Oregon (View more photos from the museum!)

Yesterday I visited the Santiam Historical Museum on 2nd Ave. I've been by it any number of times, and even took a photo of the outside, but had never been inside. I'm glad I finally happened by when it was open.

I was impressed by the various items on display -- old clothing and hats, tools, photographs, newspaper articles, household items, and so on. I took several photos, so I'll be posting more from the museum tomorrow.

Museum president Evelyn Fuson (shown at right, sitting at an antique organ which still plays) showed me around, and was very kind and patient with all my questions. She told me of some of the history surrounding the various pieces, and about the museum itself.

Evelyn is obviously a dedicated volunteer who cares deeply about the museum. Her main concerns are funding and preserving it for future generations. I think perhaps it gets overlooked, which is a shame. After visiting, I can see why Evelyn and the other volunteers give their time to the museum. I hope those in the area will get involved, whether it be by visiting or donating. As with any non-profit organization, any little bit helps.

The museum's information:

230 2nd Ave.
Stayton, OR 97383
(503) 769-1406

Hours: 1-4pm Saturdays

It's well worth a visit, and worth the support of the community.

Hope For Humanity - sunset in Stayton Oregon

I have to confess this is not a new photo. I actually took it in early June. I haven't been able to get out and take photos over the last handful of days, so I've had to dig back a bit into my archive. I hope to correct that this weekend.

I took this at the corner of 3rd and Fern Ridge Rd.

Summer Landscape

Summer Landscape - a field and trees in Stayton Oregon

We've had a pretty dry summer, with only a little bit of rain once or twice in the last month or two (gosh, how is that for specifics?). That leads to a lot of brown grass, especially in the fields surrounding Stayton. The field in the foreground is next to the Public Works reservoir and pump station, while the fields in the background are farming fields. The row of trees in the middle run along either side of Fern Ridge Rd.

Please Drive Carefully - a city limits population sign in Stayton Oregon

Ah, Stayton, you're such a great big huge humongous town. This city limits sign out E. Santiam St. says our population stands at 7765 people. Wow. And just think, last year when I took a picture of a different city limits sign, it said 7700 people. My how we've grown.

I passed by this poor sunflower yesterday. I'd have to say it's seen better days. But, still, it has a certain appeal to me, since it's not the typical view of the flower one usually sees. Then again, I am easily amused.

DP Theme Day: Metal

DP Theme Day: Metal - a mosaic of padlocks in Stayton Oregon

Today is the monthly city daily photo theme day. This month is "metal" and various interpretations therein.

I have a thing for taking pictures of padlocks, so I figured they're metal, the things they're hooked to are metal, which makes it a regular metalfest of metalness. I've includes links to the individual lock photos at the bottom of this post, below the links to my fellow DP'ers theme day links.

Speaking of those fine, smart, and all around stunning individuals, click on the link below to view the thumbnails at the CityDailyPhoto site, or click on the links below that for direct links to the participating DP sites.
