Stuck In The Mud
Jan 29th
This is part two of a two-part post (see yesterday’s post for day one), showing some of the things revealed by the water being backed up at the power canal off of 4th Ave.
The photo above is of some mud and rocks which created a nifty pattern, and the photo at right (click on it to see it larger) is some vegetation on top of said mud and rocks. I wanted to post that second photo in color, but it didn’t look right. So I fell back on black and white, as I sometimes do.
A Firm Understanding
Jan 28th
It’s time once again to visit my favorite power canal off of the south end of 4th St. For whatever reason, a work crew of some variety was out two days ago working on or near the canal, and they had stopped the water flow so that most of the canal bed was exposed. Normally, only the tops of the bridge supports shown above can be seen.
I may post another photo or two from the canal tomorrow. My favorite camera lens is broken, so I’m having to use one of lesser quality. I’m not all that happy with how my pictures came out, as a result.
Fire Service Appreciation Day
Jan 27th
Today is Fire Service Appreciation Day here in Oregon. It was recently declared by the state government as a way to bring recognition to the various fire service members around the state. Oregon.gov has some information up about the day, plus the Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal is hosting Fire Service Appreciation Day at the Capitol in Salem from 10am-3pm today with formal presentations on the capitol steps beginning at 11am.
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a huge fan of firefighters and related fire service members. Both of my brothers were volunteers in the Stayton department when they were younger, plus the fire department (and police) kept my house from burning down last year after it was set on fire by an arsonist.
So, next time you see a firefighter or other emergency services worker, tell ‘em thanks for all they do.
Strong Enough

I’m fairly certain these are birch trees… or possibly willow. Or maybe something else entirely. Not a clue, really. I can’t remember what the trees look like when they’re not barren, even though I’ve passed by them any number of times in my life. The trees live a couple of blocks away (to the north) from St. Mary’s Catholic School.
I was thinking I hadn’t ever posted a photo of these trees, but it turns out I’d posted a very similar shot back in 2006. We’ll just pretend that one doesn’t exist (yes, I know I linked to it so that’s impossible, and that if I hadn’t linked to it you likely wouldn’t have know it did exist in the first place. Don’t bother me with details.).
Playing With Traffic
Jan 25th
I took these 30-second exposure shots on Fern Ridge Rd., right after I took yesterday’s photo of the power sub-station. I happened to hit it when several cars were going by in both directions.
I hope you’ll click here to view the photo at left in a larger size. The power sub-station sits on a hill, so the photo is looking down the hill towards the east.
Wanted: your photo(s)!
Don’t forget, I love posting photos from guest photographers! If you’re interested, please read how to contribute a photo. All skills levels are welcome, so it doesn’t matter if you use a point and shoot or a pro grade DSLR. Thanks!

Regis High School
Jan 23rd
Today’s photo is of Regis High School, the Catholic high school on Regis St. I happened to be in the neighborhood, so thought I’d get a shot of it. I posted another photo of the school back in 2007, taken from the other side of the buildings.
