Today is Memorial Day in the United States (see the Wikipedia entry for this holiday). The City put out several U.S. flags along 3rd Ave. in honor of the day and what it means. I took this photo in front of City Hall. This holiday is technically intended to honor those who have died while More >

These flags fly over the fire department on Ida St. I don’t have a picture of it, but the back side of the Oregon flag has a beaver, because Oregon is “The Beaver State.” (Insert your favorite beaver-related joke here.) I think it’s the only state flag in the United States to be two-sided. Correction: More >

Today is the US holiday Memorial Day (read the Wikipedia entry to find out what it entails). I stopped by Lone Oak Cemetery, which is on the corner of 3rd Ave. and Fern Ridge Rd., yesterday to take this photo. A Stayton (our town was named for Drury Smith Stayton) family tombstone sits in the More >

Today is Presidents’ Day here in the United States. I didn’t happen to have a photo of a president on hand, so here’s an American flag instead. Yay. It’s my neighbor’s flag… I always like to look down the street and see it waving in the breeze.

I took the image above during the town parade on the 4th of July. There were a lot of flags in the parade, both big and small. I’m aware some folks outside of the United States are curious as to why we Americans are so fond of our flag. Each part of the flag means More >

For those of you in the United States, I hope you have a very happy and safe day, celebrating our country’s birthday. To those of you in other parts of the world, I hope you also have a happy and safe day, doing whatever it is you’re doing today. I plan on attending the town More >

I’ve posted a photo or two (okay, three) of the neon sign on the Star Cinema before, but it’s so cool, I’m doing it again. The flag behind the sign is at the police station, which sits right next door to the Star. I really need to go back at night when it’s lit and More >

This flag was on the front of a house. Judging by how faded it is, I’d say it’s been there for some time.

Today’s photo is of the American flag which flies above the police station on 3rd Ave. I tend to take a lot of photos of the flag, since it represents this country, with every part of the design full of meaning. Plus it’s pretty.

A great way to memorialize the day, Celine, both the symbol and the comments. I, too, posted a memory for today.

I have always admired the straightforwardness and outright decency of the many Americans if have met over the years. I see nothing wrong with having the flag as a symbol of all that you hold dear.
I think many people from different nations will be thinking of those loved and lost on this day 8 years ago.

Thank you, Celine, for remembering –far too few people outside the NY and Washington DC area seem to bother marking the occasion. I live in NJ, a state that was horribly impacted that day –nearly 800 NJ residents died, people who commuted the short distance between NJ and Manhattan every day to work. Thousands lost their jobs in the collapses of the twin towers, the marriott hotel, and the two other buildings in the Trade Center complex that collapsed or were severely damaged. We must never forget the lives left unfinished.
