Yellow, Green, And A Bit Of Purple
Feb 28th
I was down by the library on 1st Ave. when I spotted an Oregon-grape shrub on its way to bloom. Oregon-grape (sometimes spelled Oregon grape, without the hyphen) is Oregon’s state flower. I’m going to try to watch for when it is in bloom, so I can get another photo.
For more info on Oregon-grape, see its Wikipedia entry. It explains why it’s not really a grape, among other things. Though now I have a craving for actual grapes. Hmm.
An Early Spring
Feb 25th
It is odd to have daffodils in bloom… like the tree blossoms I posted yesterday, it seems to be about a month early. I wonder how our mild winter will affect the coming months.
This photo was taken on the top of the hill on 10th Ave.
Picking At The Remains
Feb 23rd
We have a photo from guest photographer Moe today. His description:
Took this [last] Tuesday at Phillips. Kinda looks like an ole buzzard picking away at the remains of Phillips Industry. We should get used to seeing this kind of activity.
Thanks for the photo, Moe. I haven’t been by the Phillips plant since they announced it was closing. It was Stayton’s largest employer, so it’s extra sad to see it go.

Coast Road Trip, Part 7
Feb 22nd
Today brings the final installment of my road trip to the central Oregon coast. This is another shot from a beach in Newport of some dog walkers and little dog… it just made me smile to see it.
Here’s an aerial view of the beach on Google Maps.
I’ve created a photoset at Flickr of my various photos of the coast… there are over 50 there. Thanks for indulging me this week while I went off (geographical) topic.
Tomorrow will be something… well, either similar, or different. I haven’t decided yet. But it will be by a guest photographer, that much I know. I think.
Coast Road Trip, Part 6
Feb 21st
Here’s another installment from my central Oregon coast road trip. I’ve decided to make it an even week, so there will be another post tomorrow.
These shots of waves was taken a bit south of Depoe Bay, if I remember correctly. Click on the photo at right to make it bigger. I had never taken photos of waves before, so I can’t say I did them justice… it was fun trying, though.
One more coast photo tomorrow. Stay tuned.
Coast Road Trip, Part 5
Feb 20th
Today’s photo from my road trip to the central Oregon coast shows some fishing boats in the marina at Yaquina Bay in Newport. We’d come down there to see some sea lions (say that three times fast), but they were all hanging out back behind a building. Darn them. The photo at right is of a fishing boat with the Yaquina Bay Bridge in the background (click on it to see it larger).
I might post another photo from the coast tomorrow. Hey, I had a change of scenery for once, so I’m taking advantage of it. I’ll get back to Stayton soon enough.
If you are a Twitter user and love the Oregon coast, check out @Oregon_Coast, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium just started at @orcoastaquarium, too.
Coast Road Trip, Part 4
Feb 19th
And here we are at part four of my mid-Oregon coast road trip (see also: Yaquina Bay Bridge, a Newport beach at sunset, and a pier at Siletz Bay, this time stopping in at Depoe Bay. I keep wanting to spell that as Depot, which is so very wrong. I shall try to refrain.
This is looking out at the bay itself, right along Highway 101. I’m sure this particular view has been photographed many times, but I’m nothing if not unoriginal.
Google Maps Street View shows the outcropping, if you’re interested in where it is in relation to other things.
I’m going to post at least one more photo from my coast trip tomorrow. Y’all come back now, ya hear?
