Countryside
Jun 9th
Stayton is almost completely surrounded by country roads (the exception is the north side where Sublimity is located, not far down the road). There are a lot of scenes like the one above — trees, grass, and clouds. I took this particular shot along Kingston-Jordan Dr., just south of town, over the weekend.
Remembering on Memorial Day
May 31st
Today is Memorial Day in the United States (see the Wikipedia entry for this holiday). The City put out several U.S. flags along 3rd Ave. in honor of the day and what it means. I took this photo in front of City Hall.
This holiday is technically intended to honor those who have died while in military service, but it’s taken on a broader meaning. So, today, no matter where you are, I hope you’ll take a few moments to remember those who have come before us, loved ones who have passed on, and military service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country.
Oregon, USA
May 3rd
These flags fly over the fire department on Ida St. I don’t have a picture of it, but the back side of the Oregon flag has a beaver, because Oregon is “The Beaver State.” (Insert your favorite beaver-related joke here.) I think it’s the only state flag in the United States to be two-sided.
Correction: I do have a photo of the back. Turns out I took a similar photo back in 2006, and managed to get both sides of the flag that time. Huh. They weren’t the same flags, though, so that makes it totally different. Yep.
New Facebook Fan Page!
I have no idea why, except it was the middle of the night and I was bored and somewhat feverish, but I created a Facebook fan page for this here blog. Introducing the…
Stayton Daily Photo Facebook Fan Page!
See how I made the text all big there? That’s to make it seem more important and exciting than it really is. Anyway, if you have Facebook and are so inclined, like the page. And post to the wall. And start a discussion. And… and… uh, well, you know, whatever.
Wilco & Farmers
Apr 10th
Wilco Farmers is an agricultural store, with a lot of area farms for customers. I thought the truck sitting in front of it, piled up with hay bales, was appropriate.
I was going to wax eloquently about American farms and so on, but my ability to be eloquent is offline today. Insert your own thoughts and conclusions here.
Twice As Nice

Visitor and great idea person Jason Jones suggested I do a “then and now” comparison of the Stayton-Jordan Bridge. He pointed me to some photos in the Salem Library online archive of the bridge, taken around 1960. And so I shall.
I don’t want to post the Library’s photos here because it would violate their guidelines, so linkage will commence after a brief summary of the bridge.
Once upon a time (1937, to be exact, though some of the dates which follow might be a wee bit off), the Jordan Bridge was built over Thomas Creek at Jordan east of nearby Scio. It stood for almost 50 years before volunteers saved it from being torn down. Instead, the disassembled it and rebuilt it in Stayton’s Pioneer Park in 1985. A fire destroyed the bridge in 1994 so volunteers once again rebuilt the bridge in 1998. The current version stayed true to the original.
If you visit this link at the Library’s Oregon Historic Photograph Collections site you can view some great photos of the bridge as it was 50 years ago. I especially like this photo because it shows not only the bridge, but also the area around it (even an old car).
Thanks, Jason, for the link to the photos — I had no idea they existed — and for the great idea. I appreciate it a lot, especially since it gave me an excuse to take more photos of my favorite bridge.
Welcome
Jan 31st
Yesterday, I posted a photo taken on 3rd Ave. looking south, so for no reason whatsoever, here’s a photo taken in basically the same spot, looking the other direction. This time it’s looking up at some businesses instead of the sidewalk, so I suppose that’s different.
For a historical view of things, these buildings were constructed in the early 1910′s, and are part of “historic downtown Stayton.”
Late Afternoon At The A&W
Dec 27th
The sun created some nifty shadows in the parking lot at the A&W Restaurant on Washington St. yesterday. The pavement was kind of frosty due to the cold, moist air, which also made for an interesting texture on the ground.
Note: I changed the permalink structure on the blog. I don’t think it will break any links, but if you notice anything out of whack, please let me know. Thanks.
