Fill The Boot
Apr 18th
Yesterday the Stayton Fire Department held a “Fill The Boot” fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). They held it on the corner of 1st Ave. and Washington St., and had a few trucks out, and several people out collecting donations. It was nifty.
I know the International Association of Firefighters is a big supporter of the MDA, and continue to amaze me each year with how much money they raise. That is because of fundraisers like this, with folks volunteering their time and energy for a good cause.
I love firefighters. They rock.
The Brown House In White
Mar 13th
It’s been several months since I last posted a progress update photo of the Charles & Martha Brown House, currently being renovated by a group of volunteers (read more about it on the Brown House web site).
It’s come a long way since I last photographed it back in July of last year. New paint, new railings, new steps… it really looks great. I can’t wait until it’s finished, which will hopefully be in 2012.
Picking At The Remains
Feb 23rd
We have a photo from guest photographer Moe today. His description:
Took this [last] Tuesday at Phillips. Kinda looks like an ole buzzard picking away at the remains of Phillips Industry. We should get used to seeing this kind of activity.
Thanks for the photo, Moe. I haven’t been by the Phillips plant since they announced it was closing. It was Stayton’s largest employer, so it’s extra sad to see it go.

Santiam Senior Center Grand Opening
Jan 15th
(Click here to see my Flickr photoset of the grand opening!)
Yesterday I attended the grand opening of the Santiam Senior Center, at the invitation of Greg McWayne, president of the center’s non-profit organization. The new center is housed in a space provided by the Stayton Cooperative Telephone Company (SCTC), for a whopping $1 a year. SCTC really went out of their way to do what they could for the center (and will even be adding full cooking abilities to the kitchen), as did many other volunteers and sponsors. I’m pretty sure Stayton has never had a senior center before, and I think this one will be a great fit for the community.
Greg has created a Facebook group for the center. You don’t have to have a Facebook account to view the group page, but if you do have an account, you can become a fan (member) of the group.
The center’s first official open day will be on Tuesday, the 19th, and their hours will be Tuesday – Thursday, 10am to 4pm. Their address:
Santiam Senior Center
41818 Kingston-Jordan Rd.
Stayton, OR 97383
And their phone number is 503-767-2009. They are looking for donations — books, CD’s, televisions, couches, bookshelves, etc., so if you are able to donate, please contact them.
Good luck to everyone involved. It’s great to see the community come together to make this happen.
The mosaic above shows a bit of the grand opening, including the members of the board, Greg, and various attendees. You can visit the Flickr photoset I created for the various photos I took.
Here’s the Google Maps Street View of the building.
Stayton Fire Chief Jack Carriger
Dec 17th
I took the opportunity to snap a photo of Stayton Fire District’s fire chief, Jack Carriger, a couple of weeks ago at the 2009 Santa Cruise. I am huge fan of firefighters, since both of my brothers were volunteers at the department, and the department saved my house last year after it was set on fire.
Firefighters and other emergency responders put themselves out there every day in order help others. I’ll take any chance to highlight them I can get.
Thanks to Chief Carriger for putting up with my taking the photo. I appreciate it.
Stayton Community Food Bank
Dec 12th
Just a friendly reminder today to remember those who are less fortunate this holiday season. Giving food or monetary donations to your local community food bank is good karma.
Stayton’s food bank recently moved into a bigger building on 2nd Ave. to better serve the community’s needs. If you can help defray the Food Bank’s rent, or donate food items, please do. Their phone number is (503) 769-4088. You can mail monetary donations to:
Stayton Community Food Bank
155 N 2nd Ave
Stayton OR 97383
There is also a mail slot on the front door of the Food Bank. Please help those in need this season, and all year round.
2009 Holiday Craft Bazaar
Dec 9th
(See my Flickr photoset from this event!)
Saturday was this year’s Holiday Craft Bazaar, held at Stayton Middle School. There were a lot of booths, a lot of people, and I have a small amount of photos to show for it. Check ‘em out at my Flickr photoset from the bazaar.
Thanks to those who allowed me to take photos of their wares. I appreciate it.
2009 Santa Cruise Part II
Dec 8th
(View my Flickr photoset of the event!)
Today is the second part of my photos from the 2009 Santa Cruise classic car show and toy drive held at the Stayton Fire Department on Saturday. Yesterday I posted photos of the toys, so today I’m focusing on the cars.
It was quite cold during the car show, so I didn’t get anywhere near as many photos as I would have liked, despite all the cool cars on display. But you can view the photos I did get of it and the various donated toys in my Flickr photoset of the event.
Tomorrow I’ll be posting photos from the holiday craft bazaar held at the middle school. Stay tuned.
2009 Santa Cruise
Dec 7th
The 19th Annual Santa Cruise, a fundraiser for the Stayton Fire Department’s Toys For Joy program, was held on Saturday morning. I did my best to take photos, but it was extremely cold (sub-freezing), so I didn’t get as many as I would have liked. I heard there were well over 200 hundred cars. Not bad.
Today’s post is all about the toys, though. The entrance fee for the car show was a toy donation, and of course plenty of folks brought toys, even if they weren’t entering the show. The top photo shows a small portion of the donated toys, which surrounded the department’s awesome old fire truck. They also held a breakfast, and (provided I read a sign posted at the event correctly) the proceeds from that went to the purchase of presents for older children.
Tomorrow I’ll post a couple of photos of the car show portion, then the next day I’ll post photos from the craft bazaar held at the middle school. In tomorrow’s post I’ll also have a photo gallery of the event. Stay tuned.
DP Theme Day: Waiting
Nov 30th
Today is this month’s City Daily Photo theme day, with the theme “Waiting.” I felt a photo of a Salvation Army bell ringer to be appropriate for the theme, since these volunteers ring their bells and wait for donations, often in the cold, as it was yesterday when I took this photo. Check out the nifty furry hat the volunteer, John Rydholm, is wearing.
John graciously allowed me to take his photo at Bi-Mart on Shaff Rd. Thanks for agreeing to the photo, and for volunteering your time. You rock.
For those unfamiliar with the Salvation Army, please visit their web site to find out more information. And maybe the next time you see one of those iconic red kettles, you’ll drop some money in. It’s for a good cause.
Many more City Daily Photo bloggers are participating in today’s theme day. Check ‘em out by clicking below:
