Thanks for the photo, Moe. I haven’t been by the Phillips plant since they announced it was closing. It was Stayton’s largest employer, so it’s extra sad to see it go.

Yesterday I attended the grand opening of the Santiam Senior Center, at the invitation of Greg McWayne, president of the center’s non-profit organization. The new center is housed in a space provided by the Stayton Cooperative Telephone Company (SCTC), for a whopping $1 a year. SCTC really went out of their way to do what they could for the center (and will even be adding full cooking abilities to the kitchen), as did many other volunteers and sponsors. I’m pretty sure Stayton has never had a senior center before, and I think this one will be a great fit for the community.

Greg has created a Facebook group for the center. You don’t have to have a Facebook account to view the group page, but if you do have an account, you can become a fan (member) of the group.

The center’s first official open day will be on Tuesday, the 19th, and their hours will be Tuesday – Thursday, 10am to 4pm. Their address:

Santiam Senior Center
41818 Kingston-Jordan Rd.
Stayton, OR 97383

And their phone number is 503-767-2009. They are looking for donations — books, CD’s, televisions, couches, bookshelves, etc., so if you are able to donate, please contact them.

Good luck to everyone involved. It’s great to see the community come together to make this happen.

The mosaic above shows a bit of the grand opening, including the members of the board, Greg, and various attendees. You can visit the Flickr photoset I created for the various photos I took.

The 19th Annual Santa Cruise, a fundraiser for the Stayton Fire Department’s Toys For Joy program, was held on Saturday morning. I did my best to take photos, but it was extremely cold (sub-freezing), so I didn’t get as many as I would have liked. I heard there were well over 200 hundred cars. Not [...]

I did my best to take photos, but it was extremely cold (sub-freezing), so I didn’t get as many as I would have liked. I heard there were well over 200 hundred cars. Not bad.

Today’s post is all about the toys, though. The entrance fee for the car show was a toy donation, and of course plenty of folks brought toys, even if they weren’t entering the show. The top photo shows a small portion of the donated toys, which surrounded the department’s awesome old fire truck. They also held a breakfast, and (provided I read a sign posted at the event correctly) the proceeds from that went to the purchase of presents for older children.

Tomorrow I’ll post a couple of photos of the car show portion, then the next day I’ll post photos from the craft bazaar held at the middle school. In tomorrow’s post I’ll also have a photo gallery of the event. Stay tuned.

Today is this month’s City Daily Photo theme day, with the theme “Waiting.” I felt a photo of a Salvation Army bell ringer to be appropriate for the theme, since these volunteers ring their bells and wait for donations, often in the cold, as it was yesterday when I took this photo. Check out the nifty furry hat the volunteer, John Rydholm, is wearing.

John graciously allowed me to take his photo at Bi-Mart on Shaff Rd. Thanks for agreeing to the photo, and for volunteering your time. You rock.

For those unfamiliar with the Salvation Army, please visit their web site to find out more information. And maybe the next time you see one of those iconic red kettles, you’ll drop some money in. It’s for a good cause.

I mentioned this the other day, but wanted to highlight it again because I feel it deserves more attention. Please note: I’m not affiliated with the station, I just want to see it get back on the air.

The FCC recently shut down KENC Radio, a community-based radio station here in Stayton which was run by Ken Cartwright. The FCC said the station was violating FCC guidelines, though that is in question. What isn’t in question is we need to get the station back on the air so people in town can once again tune in on their radios.

To learn more:

Article at OregonLive.com

KENC Radio – Ken’s Response to the FCC ruling

Help support Ken and the station by writing to Senator Ron Wyden in order to try to get his help in the matter. His web site has various ways to contact him, including an email contact form. But I strongly suggest writing a snail mail letter or make a phone call (his contact info is on the left-hand side, under the graphic of Oregon), since traditionally, a written letter or phone call tend to get more of a response.

I hope I don’t need to say this, but when you write (and I really hope you do), please be respectful and non-accusatory. It’s far more likely to get a positive response.

Also, Ken is keeping the station streaming via the site, and needs funds to keep it going and to fight the FCC ruling. Any help you can provide would be awesome. There is a PayPal donate button on the site, and you can drop by Cartwright Music Repair on 3rd Ave. to make a donation in person.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for your help.

Today marks the eighth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks in New York City and the Pentagon, plus the downed plane in Pennsylvania.
Today marks the eighth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks in New York City and the Pentagon, plus the downed plane in Pennsylvania. I’m ashamed to say the date sneaked up on me… it wasn’t until late last night when I was typing in the date on another post that I remembered.

I’ve noticed that some folks in other countries are confused by how “into” the U.S. flag we Americans are. But to me, it represents everything about our country… how it came to be, the unity of the 50 states, and what we continue to work for and stand for. The terrorist attacks only served to bring us closer together as a country, and I felt posting a photo of the flag would be a good way to remember the day. Yes, we have our problems, and new problems arose after September 11th, but there’s a core there… a foundation of unity which most of us in this country hold dear. And we will never forget.
