DP Theme Day: Changes
Jan 1st
NOTE: sorry, I accidentally put 2009 as the date and not 2010, so this went up late. I apologize.
Today is this month’s City Daily Photo theme day: changes. Frequent guest photographer Hugo sent in the photo above, and it worked well for the theme. Construction crews have been working on revamping and improving the overpass and on/off ramps from Cascade Highway (the underneath street, which runs between Stayton and very nearby Sublimity) to Highway 22 (what’s on the overpass).
It’s been quite the project, and has seen a lot of changes. The overpass has been completely demolished and rebuilt. In fact, you can watch a nifty time lapse video of the demolition on YouTube. I took a photo of the construction in September of last year, which shows the old overpass:
As you can see, a lot of progress has been made. The project is important to Stayton, and it’s great to see it progressing so well.
A whole bunch of other CDP bloggers are participating in today’s theme day. Check ‘em out below:

Getting A Facelift
Aug 20th
The Church of the Nazarene on Washington is getting a new facade. I posted a photo of the front in May of last year, and they’re making changes to area over the porch and front windows. I wonder how far the renovation will go.
Under Construction
Jun 7th
One of the buildings at Stayton Cooperative Telephone Company off of 2nd Ave. on Marion St. is undergoing construction at the moment. It appears to be an entirely new building.
I’m a big fan of the phone company, and their internet service provider, Willamette Valley Internet (WVI). They’ve been upgrading all the phone lines in town to fiber optic, and can now offer 50Mb DSL speeds for a very reasonable price. That makes me incredibly happy. I’ve had DSL through them for about 10 years, and I have no complaints.
Dead End
Sep 14th
Cascade Highway, the road which runs between Stayton and Sublimity, is presently in the middle of a two-week shut down where it branches off to Highway 22. Highway 22 is undergoing a large renovation project, so that part of Cascade Highway is also being renovated to accommodate. The road blocks in the photo span Cascade Highway.
House Made Of Sticks
Mar 22nd
I spotted this new home being constructed on 10th Ave. the other day, and thought all the lines on the roof part were nifty.
This house sits up a bit of a hill from another new home I photographed back in 2006. The houses are basically back-to-back, though there is some space between them.
Renovation
Feb 13th
Guest photographer Moe has provided today’s image of the renovation of something of a landmark in Stayton.
The Dairy Queen restaurant was a fixture on 1st Ave., across from Regis Field for a good many years. I remember going there frequently for ice cream as a kid.
The DQ is still around, but it moved to a new location. It’s nicer now that it’s all brand new, but there was something nostalgic about the old building.
It sat empty for some time before it was eventually renovated. This photo, taken in 2005, shows part of the process. It’s now a new fast food restaurant (a combo of Taco Time, Samurai Sam’s, and a smoothie place of which I can’t remember the name) with an entirely different feel to it.
Thanks, Moe, for sharing the photo!

Stayton Public Library Expansion Update
Jun 11th
Time once again for my periodic photo of the Stayton Public Library to show how far along they are in the expansion construction which will more than double its size.
So here it is.
Okay, some actual information of the informational variety: according to the library expansion foundation’s web site, the building will add 7500 square feet to its existing 5000 square feet.
The construction should be completed within a few weeks. They’ve raised over 2 million dollars through fund raising, grants, etc. I’ve just been amazed how this pretty small community has put this much time, effort, and money into this project. It’s rather cool.
Note: I actually took this photo a week ago, so it’s probably a bit further along than pictured.
Previous library construction photos:
I missed getting a photo in May. It’s just one of those things.
Now It’s Gone
Apr 11th
Last month I posted a photo of Stayton Bowl, Stayton’s only bowling alley. Its roof collapse a few years ago and had been closed ever since.
I had been hoping the alley would eventually reopen, but as you can see in the photo above, it was torn down instead. It’s quite sad to see it go. It had been around since the late 1950′s.
Bye bye, bowling alley. You shall be missed.
Stayton Public Library Construction Update
Apr 9th
Stayton’s library has been undergoing construction for an expansion over the last several months, and I’ve been posting photos of its progress here and there. This photo is of the back side of the library, taken from the park behind the building. The library is getting very close to completion.
Previous photos can be found here (from March) and here (from February).
