DP Theme Day: Bright Colors / 2010 Santiam Summerfest Car Show
Aug 1st
(Click here to see my Flickr photoset from the car show!)
Yesterday was the 2010 Santiam Summerfest street festival and car show, held in downtown Stayton, and today is the August 1st City Daily Photo theme day (bright colors), so I’m combining the two.
Colorful cars abounded at the car show, where there were waaaay too many cars for me to photograph. I gave it a shot, though. If you want to see the cars in greater detail, head on over to my Flickr photoset. Most of the photos are up (a few got lost in the uploading, and I need to figure out which ones).
Tomorrow be posting photos from the bed races, and after that, I’ll post photos from the street festival itself. Stay tuned.
Oh, and “hi” to all the folks I ran into yesterday.

DP Theme Day: Funny Signs
Jun 1st
Today is the June 1st City Daily Photo theme day of funny signs. I’ve been saving this particular photo for a couple of months, because I knew the theme was a possibility, and it was the closest I could come to fitting the theme.
Obviously, someone cut off the word “after.” But I like the idea of the sign advocating clean dogs.
I took this at the entrance to Wilderness Park, at the back of Pioneer Park.
And since the above photo is kinda lame, here is a bonus photo of a sign I took a few weeks ago next to the door of Quiznos (a sub shop):
Not excepting them from what? Does that mean accepting? I’m not sure, really, since they’ve since changed the word to “accepting,” so maybe that means they are excepting. I’m so confused.

DP Theme Day: Statues
May 1st
Today is this month’s City Daily Photo theme day: statues. As usual, I completely forgot about it until yesterday evening, so I trudged out in a light rain and took this photo of a Madonna statue on the grounds of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on 6th Ave.
The statue wasn’t lit when I was there (10:30pm), so this is a 56 second exposure to compensate for the lack of light. I chose this particular statue for the simple fact I couldn’t think of any others in town. And it was 10:30pm, so I couldn’t exactly go tootling around town to try to find others. That was the biggest factor of all, really. Did I mention it was raining?

DP Theme Day: Red
Apr 1st
Today is the April 1st City Daily Photo theme day, this time for the color red. I spotted this bright red 1950′s Chevy Bel Air station wagon (so I’ve been told, anyway… I’m not a car person) in a parking lot the other day, and I thought it fit the bill. I took all the color out of the photo but the red to make it stand out more.
For those interested, I took this on 1st Ave., in the parking lot of Ace Hardware.

DP Theme Day: Passageway
Mar 1st
For this month’s City Daily Photo theme day — passageway — I did what I normally do, which is forget completely about it and then take a photo on the last possible day. At least I’m consistent.
This photo was taken at the entrance to the main forest pathway at Wilderness Park. It’s the first thing I thought of when trying to choose what to photograph for the theme.

DP Theme Day: Wood
Feb 1st
Today is the February 1st City Daily Photo theme day: wood. I almost posted a photo of some trees (they are wood, after all), but at the last minute I decided to go with the above photo instead.
These two wooden toys have been passed down from generation to generation in my family for decades. The front toy is a simple disappearing penny trick, while the back one is an egg-shaped puzzle. I would venture to guess they are at least 50-60 years old, though probably older. I had forgotten about the toys until my 19-year-old nephew pulled them out to show his girlfriend a few days ago. He was pretty happy when he was finally able to put the egg puzzle together… it’s a bit tricky.
Since I don’t have kids, I’m waiting for my nieces and nephews to start having their own children so I can keep the family tradition alive.

DP Theme Day: Changes
Jan 1st
NOTE: sorry, I accidentally put 2009 as the date and not 2010, so this went up late. I apologize.
Today is this month’s City Daily Photo theme day: changes. Frequent guest photographer Hugo sent in the photo above, and it worked well for the theme. Construction crews have been working on revamping and improving the overpass and on/off ramps from Cascade Highway (the underneath street, which runs between Stayton and very nearby Sublimity) to Highway 22 (what’s on the overpass).
It’s been quite the project, and has seen a lot of changes. The overpass has been completely demolished and rebuilt. In fact, you can watch a nifty time lapse video of the demolition on YouTube. I took a photo of the construction in September of last year, which shows the old overpass:
As you can see, a lot of progress has been made. The project is important to Stayton, and it’s great to see it progressing so well.

DP Theme Day: Waiting
Nov 30th
Today is this month’s City Daily Photo theme day, with the theme “Waiting.” I felt a photo of a Salvation Army bell ringer to be appropriate for the theme, since these volunteers ring their bells and wait for donations, often in the cold, as it was yesterday when I took this photo. Check out the nifty furry hat the volunteer, John Rydholm, is wearing.
John graciously allowed me to take his photo at Bi-Mart on Shaff Rd. Thanks for agreeing to the photo, and for volunteering your time. You rock.
For those unfamiliar with the Salvation Army, please visit their web site to find out more information. And maybe the next time you see one of those iconic red kettles, you’ll drop some money in. It’s for a good cause.

DP Theme Day: Doorways
Nov 1st
Today is the November 1st City Daily Photo theme day, and “doorways” is the topic. My photo is something of an unconventional take on it. A drunk driver plowed through the Chase Bank on the corner of 1st Ave. and Locust St. a few days ago, and created an impromptu doorway of his own with his truck. The boarded up area is where the truck went through into the bank lobby. More of the building is boarded up inside. The actually door to the bank is on the left side of the photo.
For more of the story and photos taken just after the incident, check out the report on StaytonEvents.com.
Tomorrow I’ll post a proper doorway photo, just for the heck of it. Stay tuned.

DP Theme Day: Contrast
Oct 1st
Today is the monthly City Daily Photo theme day, and our theme is “contrast.” I have to confess I didn’t have a clue what to post… I thought literal contrast, conceptual contrast, and in the end I went with a photo I took about a week ago of a hazy sunset due to some wildfires in the area. I thought the sun really stood out against the very orange sky, and also against the silhouettes created by the telephone poles and wires. Contrast.
I posted two other photos from that sunset previously — Hot Stuff and Forever More.
