I’m not sure how I missed this before now, as I’ve been by it any number of times. This rather large tree stump sits at the side of E. Ida St (near were it crosses 4th Ave.)… literally in the road itself. Well, the gravel part of the road, that is. Odd. I like it.

In fact, Google Maps Street View has a great shot of it, if you want to see it in context. I recommend it.

Important late breaking info! Awesome local person (and sometimes guest photographer) John Brandt offered up info about da stump:

That’s the stump of the Lawrence Sprecker maple. The City of Stayton had it taken down because they thought it was a hazard to cars and pedestrians.

[It was cut down] probably about ten years ago. They had a difficult time cutting it down because Mr Sprecker (he was a long time editor of the Stayton Mail and lived in the yellow house in the background) had filled the cavity in the trunk with concrete. They used to do that as a way to prevent decomposition–it never worked but it sure was hard on chainsaws.

Thanks, John!

I spotted this awesome license plate the other day on 3rd Ave. I don’t know what inspired it, but it may have been another license plate I saw a few minutes later on the same street just a few blocks away. I’ll post that tomorrow. That one would have me saying “uh oh” too.

This reader board at Stayton Cleaners on Washington St. made me chuckle. I can’t decide if two guys named Al Erations and L. Ather are asking for folks’ laundry, or if ol’ Al wants to lather someone’s laundry all by himself.
For the curious, the two missing letters on the sign are ‘t’ and ‘e’.

I found this hubcap (hubcapius automotus) growing wild next to Santiam Hospital on 10th Ave. the other day. It seemed to be thriving (note the lack of rust), even though the weather has turned cold and damp. I was a little worried for it, because it seemed to be alone; I understand they do better in groups of four. I hope there were others nearby.

I feel fortunate I was able to catch a glimpse of it, since the wild hubcap is rarely found outside of captivity. Civilization has unfortunately encroached on its natural habitat.

Today I thought I’d focus on some of the non-car things I spotted at the event, including the lively guy in the above photo. He was sitting in the passenger’s seat of one of the cars. I wonder if he qualifies the driver to use the carpool lane?

Another car had three dogs in it, including the one at right (see the other dogs), who was curled up in the driver’s seat.

My Flickr photoset of the event has more photos of both the car and non-car varieties, so be sure to give it a visit. I’m still in the process of uploading photos, so they’ll be a lot more there over the coming days.

Okay, I have two theories about this sign outside Stayton Fitness on 2nd Ave. The first one is ’spinning kickbox’ is a class designed around the premise that one must spin constantly while kickboxing. The very thought of that makes me so dizzy I want to… um, think about something else.

Okay, I have two theories about this sign outside Stayton Fitness on 2nd Ave. The first one is ’spinning kickbox’ is a class designed around the premise that one must spin constantly while kickboxing. The very thought of that makes me so dizzy I want to… um, think about something else.

My other theory is they have spinning boxes, and the classes teach you various ways to kick them. I hope they’re sturdy spinning boxes.

Either way, it sounds interesting.

I suppose it’s possible these are, in fact, two separate classes. If that’s the case, maybe I’ll develop my two theories into actual classes and sell them to various gyms and fitness centers and make loads of money. I’ll be rich, rich I tell you!

This sign I spotted at Neitling Park has me a bit perplexed. What is that thing the person on the sign is holding, and what does it do? And why is it pointing at that dog’s back end?

I don’t know, but I do have a few theories. 1) The end has a mirror on it so the person will be warned when the dog is about to do his duty. 2) It’s some sort of, um, plug to prevent the dog from spoiling the grass. 3) it doesn’t really do anything, and the makers of the sign were just really, really confused. If so, they aren’t the only ones.

In any case, it certainly doesn’t seem to involve the litter bags available right below the sign.
