2010 Santiam Summerfest – Victorian Fashion Show
Aug 19th
New guest photographer Chris sent in today’s photos of something I completely missed at the 2010 Santiam Summerfest, held at the end of last month: a Victorian fashion show. Very cool! I’m sorry I missed seeing it in person. Click on the thumbnails below to see more photos from the event:
Thanks, Chris!
2010 Santiam Summerfest Bed Races
Aug 2nd
(See my Flickr photoset from the bed races!)
The bed races at the Santiam Summerfest on Saturday were fun. A lot of folks stopped to watch, the various teams seemed to have a good time, and there were a lot of smiles on a lot of faces.
I posted entirely too many photos from the bed races over at Flickr. They’re in chronological order. I discovered after everything was all over that my lens had smudges on it, so forgive the bits of blurriness.
Dave over at StaytonEvents.com has the results, which is good, because I forgot to write that down. Ken Cartwright was there filming the event, so hopefully that will show up soon over on his community radio and video site.
Young At Heart
Jul 21st
I was asked by Greg and Ruth McWayne of the Santiam Senior Center to take some photos at the elementary school yesterday. They are working on a calendar for the Center with the theme “forever young.” It was fun watching the folks who volunteered play on the playground, jump rope, play marbles, and more. I had trouble keeping up with them enough to get the photos.
They’re hoping to get the calendar out for next year, or the following year if that isn’t possible. Look for it when it comes out and help support the Senior Center.
Patriot, Through And Through

Frequent guest photographer Patrick is a really nice guy. He’s been helping me by finding cool photos he’s taken while real life has been keeping me busy. I really appreciate that.
His latest offering is one he took during the Independence Day parade earlier this month. His description:
In an attempt to help you get through your busy time, I went looking to see if I might be able to help you keep your daily quest. You pretty much covered the 4th of July parade, yet I did get this picture of a gentleman sitting in a chair on the sidewalk.
The photo, and the tattoo, really says all there is to say. Thanks, Patrick.
Lazy River Days
Jul 14th
Guest photographer Patrick sent in today’s photo. His description:
This guy was taking a snooze under the bridge south of town a couple weeks ago. Seemed like he had the right idea because other boats that were docking reported no luck with the fish upriver.
I love it. It looks like the ideal way to spend a hot summer’s day. Thanks, Patrick.

Guest photographer Patrick in today’s photo, taken a few days ago at the World Beat Festival held in nearby Salem. His description:
I went to the Salem World Beat Festival yesterday and saw this photo coming from forty yards away. The hard part was timing the photo without showing their full faces but still capturing their individual shade sources.
I love it… great capture, Patrick.
Day Trippin’
Jun 16th
I took this photo a couple of weekends ago. The guy on the motorcycle in front was very kind to wave at the camera.
This photo was taken on the bridge which spans the Santiam River, just past the southern city limits. I’m not sure if it’s technically 1st Ave. or Stayton-Scio Rd. at that point. I know it’s right where Marion County meets Linn County, since one of the signs is in the photo. Very helpful, that.
Flower Girl

There were several people watching the Burn To Learn on Sunday, including several children who picked some wildflowers from the field across the street from the house the fire fighters burned down. It’s nice to see kids enjoying such simple things, without the need for video games, TV, etc.
Not that I’m one to talk. I’m sitting here at my computer, with my cell phone, digital camera, etc., sitting next to me. I think I’ll just shut up now.
Burn To Learn
Jun 14th
(See my Flickr photoset from the the Burn To Learn!)
Yesterday, the Stayton Fire District held a Burn To Learn fire training exercise on a house at the corner of 10th Ave. and Santiam St. The awesome Theresa Smith of D-Tail Pet Grooming tipped me off yesterday morning. Thanks, Theresa!
The Burn To Learn took several hours to set up and complete. Many fire fighters and trucks were on hand from various area fire departments. I had never seen a Burn To Learn in person, and it was really quite fascinating to watch the fire fighters do what they do, especially in those heavy turnouts they wear. I was boiling sitting across the street from the fire… I can’t imagine how hot they were in their uniforms.
I’ve posted over 80 photos in a Flickr photoset, if you’re interested. They’re in sequential order, so the actual burning starts on page two of the set.
