Twice As Nice

Visitor and great idea person Jason Jones suggested I do a “then and now” comparison of the Stayton-Jordan Bridge. He pointed me to some photos in the Salem Library online archive of the bridge, taken around 1960. And so I shall.

I don’t want to post the Library’s photos here because it would violate their guidelines, so linkage will commence after a brief summary of the bridge.

Once upon a time (1937, to be exact, though some of the dates which follow might be a wee bit off), the Jordan Bridge was built over Thomas Creek at Jordan east of nearby Scio. It stood for almost 50 years before volunteers saved it from being torn down. Instead, the disassembled it and rebuilt it in Stayton’s Pioneer Park in 1985. A fire destroyed the bridge in 1994 so volunteers once again rebuilt the bridge in 1998. The current version stayed true to the original.

If you visit this link at the Library’s Oregon Historic Photograph Collections site you can view some great photos of the bridge as it was 50 years ago. I especially like this photo because it shows not only the bridge, but also the area around it (even an old car).

Beautiful Diversion

We have a new guest photographer today! John Brandt sent in today’s lovely image of the diversion channel between Stayton Ditch and the North Santiam River in Wilderness Park. I love the autumn colors on the trees.

Summer Lake

Guest photographer Aspen Thomas sent in this lovely photo from Summer Lake, which isn’t technically in Stayton, but it is in Oregon, so I say it’s close enough. It’s good to go outside of Stayton now and again, since this town is small.

Summer Lake, for those who don’t know, is southeast of Stayton. In fact, just click here for an arial view and location on Bing Maps. I’ve never been there, but it looks rather awesome.

Forever More

I know this is the third sunset photo I’ve posted in less than a week, but sky was absolutely gorgeous last night, and I couldn’t pass it up. For whatever reason, there was a lot of haze in the air, and it made everything very orange, and the sun was just popping. I may post another shot of the sunset tomorrow.

I took this from 1st Ave., looking over what I think is a greenhouse in Regis Field.

The sky was pretty yesterday evening as the sun went down, so I took some photos. I may post another sunset photo tomorrow, depending on my mood. This photo was taken just off of 6th Ave.

I last posted a photo of this particular view back in February, when the trees and overall tones were quite a bit different. It’s part of the Salem Ditch, which is a man made waterway built back in the 1800’s. This spot is on the corner of Washington St. and Larch Ave.
