Coneheads

Coneheads - cones at Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton Oregon

I was poking around at Lone Oak Cemetery the other day and saw these cones sitting upside down and thought they were nifty. The cones are used to hold flowers to place on graves. The red wall behind it is part of a utility shed which sits on cemetery property. I posted a photo of it last year.

Snow At The Cemetery

Snow At Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton Oregon

Lone Oak CemeterySince most of the snow seems to have melted around here, I figured I'd post snow photos once more before moving on to other things. Today's photos were taken at Lone Oak Cemetery on the corner of Fern Ridge Rd. and 3rd Ave.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow for the February 1st city daily photo theme day. I'm still undecided about what I'm going to post... I'm torn between two themes. We'll see what happens.

Lawn Ornament

Lawn Ornament - a backhoe at Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton Oregon

This backhoe sits at the back of Lone Oak Cemetery. I hadn't really paid attention to it until I went to the cemetery to take pictures in the fog. It's a nifty old vehicle, with all kinds of interesting details. A couple of detail shots are below:

Cold And Lonely

Setting The Mood - the Lone Oak Cemetery on a foggy day in Stayton Oregon

Cold And Lonely - the Lone Oak Cemetery on a foggy day in Stayton OregonYesterday was cold and very foggy. What better place to take pictures during such weather than a cemetery?

This is the Lone Oak Cemetery on the corner of 3rd Ave. and Fern Ridge Rd. It's actually a very peaceful place, but the tombstones, fog and the big, ominous looking tree made for an interesting mood.

Where You Lead

Where You Lead - the stairway entrance to St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Stayton Oregon

This is the stairway entrance to the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery on 3rd Ave. It leads to a pathway which leads to the main part of the cemetery. That big silver thing on the right is the town's water tower.

Just past this stairway is where a lot of us in town sit to watch the Independence Day fireworks each year. It provides a great vantage point without having to fight the traffic in the main part of town. That part of the cemetery is largely just a field with few burials, so nothing gets disturbed.

The Little Shed On The Hill - at Lone Oak Cemetery and St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Stayton Oregon

Today's photo is of an as yet unoccupied section of the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, looking towards a storage shed and the Lone Oak Cemetery side of things (they are side-by-side).

DP Theme Day: Cemetery / Tombstones

As If From Heaven - a cross on a tombstone at Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton Oregon

This month City Daily Photo theme day is Cemetery/Tombstones. Stayton has two cemeteries side-by-side, the Lone Oak Cemetery and the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

The photo above is of a cross on the top of one of the upright tombstones. The sun happened to be shining through the clouds right behind the cross, so I set my camera to make the cross in shadow to show more of the light.

For those who are into this sort of thing, the effect was done in-camera (f/22, 1/500 sec, ISO 100), with only minor color and contrast changes done in processing.

Click here for more photos from my walk of the cemetery.

Cemetery At Dusk

Cemetery At Dusk - St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Stayton Oregon

Today's photo is a view of St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery looking towards 3rd Ave. It sits right next to Lone Oak Cemetery. It's a peaceful place to honor those who've passed, and it's a great place to watch the sunset or the city's fireworks show on the 4th of July.

Lawn Care

Lawn Care - Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton Oregon

I have an appreciation for those who care for cemeteries, like the man in the above photo. I think we tend to take them for granted... and I'm not just saying that because my mother runs (on a volunteer basis) a cemetery in Portland. ;)

This photo was taken back in September at Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton. The cemetery has several old upright stones, so I bet it's quite the task keeping the lawn mowed with all those obstacles in the way.

Tree Stump Marker

Tree Stump Marker in Stayton Oregon

Here's the promised photo of a nifty tombstone I mentioned yesterday. This stone, located at Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton, is a Woodmen of the World marker, and looks remarkably like a real tree. Wikipedia says, "One of the most enduring physical legacies of the organization may be the number of distinctive headstones erected in the shape of a tree stump." [click here for more]

The person or persons who created this particular one were certainly talented, bringing all kinds of details and colors to it which I find remarkable, especially considering it's a century old (death date is either 1906 or 1908).

Entrance to Lone Oak

Entrance to Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton Oregon

A nifty wrought iron arch and stair railings mark the entrance to Lone Oak Cemetery on the corner of 3rd Ave. and Fern Ridge Rd. From what I've gathered, the cemetery was started in the late 1800's by a fellow named George Duncan, along with the local Oddfellows and Masonic Lodges (source: Rootsweb.com).

There are actually two cemeteries right next to each other. On one side is Lone Oak, and the other is St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. It has its own entrance, and one of these days I'll take a picture of it, too. Be sure to watch for that exciting event.

Tomorrow I'll post a photo of a rather unique marker in Lone Oak. I love it, and I hope you will, too.

Country cemetery

Tombstone in cemetery near Stayton Oregon

Today's photo was submitted by Mark in Hillsboro. It's a beautiful shot of a small cemetery near Stayton his wife's grandfather once maintained. Thanks to Mark for the submission -- it's a lovely photo.

Mark also sent a few other photos, some of which I'll be posting here and there over the next week or two. Be sure to tune in, because they're very well done.

How dramatic

Trees and clouds - Stayton Oregon

I was skittering about a few weeks ago, trying to take decent photos at a local cemetery. The sky was overcast and wasn't really cooperating in the 'good lighting for a picture' department, but then I looked up and saw the above. That's when I decided I was wrong, and the overcast skies were perfect.

It was taken standing in Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton, and I was facing... um... let's see... I think it was west. I have absolutely no sense of direction (in any sense of the word), so I had to look at a map of Stayton to figure it out. Anyway, it's pointed towards 3rd Ave. The cemetery is on the corner of 3rd Ave. and Fern Ridge Rd.

Streakin'

Evening sky over Lone Oak Cemetery - visible contrail vapor trail - Stayton Oregon trees tombstones headstones markers

A contrail (a vapor trail left by an aircraft) streaks through the evening sky over Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton, located on 3rd Ave. You can make out the tops of some of the tombstones in the cemetery.

You may be wondering whether Lone Oak does indeed have one singular oak tree. I'm pretty sure there are at least two or three oaks in the cemetery nowadays, but let's not be picky.

There are some interesting stones in the cemetery. One of these days when I'm feeling industrious (which doesn't happen often), I'll take photos of some of them and share them here... provided they don't suck, as did the pictures of the tombstones I took the other day.

On a cloudy day...

Hilltop Cemetery - independence oregon trees tombstones headstones markers clouds

This picture was taken at Hilltop Cemetery in Independence in 2002. And, in case you were wondering (and I know you were), it does indeed sit on top of a hill. Visitors are treated to a spectacular sight when looking out over the area, no matter which direction they're facing.

This cemetery has a lot of graves decorated with a wide variety of things in addition to flowers -- windmills, fences, planted flowers, etc. You can view one such grave here.

You'll see more cemetery photos over time. My mother runs a cemetery in Portland and sometimes helps people with genealogy, so I see some nice cemeteries from time to time. I tag along as the 'official' photographer.
