Little Giant

Little Giant - a crane somewhere between Lyons and Stayton Oregon

Guest photographer Jordan Lambert provided us with another nifty HDR photo (see also the photo from yesterday), this time of a crane called Little Giant. His description:
The crane is an old rail road crane on the same dead end road as the
motorcycle picture. I like that it is still in use at its age and the
title on the front says it all. "Little Giant". Very fitting for such
a well used machine.
Thanks, Jordan, for your contributions.

Well, Hail

Well, Hail - spring hail in Stayton Oregon

Hail in Stayton OregonWe had a heck of a lot of hail yesterday. It was in the mid-30's (F), and we had a big huge amount of hail. It is spring, right? Because it certainly doesn't seem like it.

My photo above shows part of that large quantity of hail covering my driveway. Guest photographer Moe's photo, at right, shows some lovely tulips with, as Moe put it, a hail garnish.

Westown Drive

Westown Drive in Stayton Oregon

Guest photographer Jordan Lambert sent in this cool HDR shot (here's Wikipedia definition of HDR) of Westown Drive, the Westown area of Stayton. His description of the photo:
This shot was taken April 17th, 2008, when we had some sun clearings after I got home from work. It is facing South on Westown Drive around 6:45pm. My son and I were out in the front yard/sidewalk and usually he stops to pose and look at the camera but I caught him mid stride/thought perfectly. I love how the clouds look in this shot.
Thanks, Jordan, for sharing this lovely image.

A boxer dog in Stayton OregonTheresa Smith, owner of D'-Tail Pet Grooming here in Stayton on Washington St., sent these adorable photos of her boxer, MaeCee Jo. Nothing is cuter than a happy dog frolicking in the grass like in the photo above. It also shows the rather decent weather Stayton's been having. Spring is almost here, and I personally can't wait.

Went to the Doerfler estate sale outside Sublimity on Thursday 02-21. Asked to see the collection of tractor seats. The old fellow at the house collected things, knives, bear traps, and tractor seats. It was interesting to see other people's collections. Anyway here is a pic of some of the tractor seats.

Renovation

The old DQ being renovated into a new restaurant in Stayton Oregon

Guest photographer Moe has provided today's image of the renovation of something of a landmark in Stayton.

The Dairy Queen restaurant was a fixture on 1st Ave., across from Regis Field for a good many years. I remember going there frequently for ice cream as a kid.

The DQ is still around, but it moved to a new location. It's nicer now that it's all brand new, but there was something nostalgic about the old building.

It sat empty for some time before it was eventually renovated. This photo, taken in 2005, shows part of the process. It's now a new fast food restaurant (a combo of Taco Time, Samurai Sam's, and a smoothie place of which I can't remember the name) with an entirely different feel to it.

Thanks, Moe, for sharing the photo!

Lighthouse Farm Animal Sanctuary

Oyte the Donkey at Lighthouse Farm Animal Sanctuary outside in Scio Oregon

Bachelor the Rooster at Lighthouse Farm Animal Sanctuary outside in Scio OregonGuest photographer Danni K. has provided us with some rather awesome photos from Lighthouse Farm Animal Sanctuary in nearby Scio. Her description of the farm:

Just down the road from the Shimanek Bridge on Richardson Gap Road in Scio is a most amazing place called the Lighthouse Farm Animal Sanctuary. This non-profit sanctuary was created after it became clear that farm animals (horses, cows, llamas, sheep, goats, pigs, etc.) taken from abusive or neglectful situations rarely had a safe place to go. This fact often prevented them from receiving the help and care they deserved. With the goal of providing a safe haven for these beautiful creatures, Wayne Geiger established the Lighthouse Farm Animal Sanctuary. Just last spring, the farm relocated to this new location on 52 wonderful acres and now provides refuge to about 160 animals.

The farm welcomes volunteers on work party days (be sure to bring apples and carrots!) and many visitor events are planned throughout the year. Be sure to visit the farm's web site (lighthousefarmsanctuary.org) if you'd like to help or want learn more about this great place.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Clear Lake on the McKenzie Pass {Highway 126) Oregon

Happy Thanksgiving! Gobble, gobble, and all that good stuff. Mainly, though, it's a time to be thankful for the good things in our lives. One of the things I'm thankful for is the guest photographers who've kindly let me post their photos.

Ronda Faught, guest photographer extraordinaire from nearby Sublimity, has once again provided two lovely images for today and tomorrow's posts. She provides wonderful glimpses at areas outside of Stayton, because as she says, "Oregon has a lot of beautiful places most within a couple hours or less from home."

Today and tomorrow's photos were taken at Clear Lake on the McKenzie Pass (Highway 126) (here are some facts about Clear Lake, if you're interested). It looks like a beautiful place to visit.

Ronda's also started a web site to showcase her photography. Give it a look:

Thanks, Ronda! I hope everyone has a very happy holiday (or, if you don't celebrate Thanksgiving, have a very happy non-holiday).
