Jordan Bridge (Again)

Jordan Bridge (Again) in Stayton Oregon

Click here to view a Photosynth based on this scene! (Windows-based machines only)

Yesterday I posted a shot of a small power canal, and linked to an accompanying Photosyth I created of the area around the canal. It makes a quasi-3D environment by automatically converting a series of overlapping photos into a virtual space where one can click around to see various views of a scene.

I've created a new Photosynth which shows Jordan Bridge, a bit of Pioneer Park (where the bridge resides) and across the street to Neitling Park. This is again a very basic usage of capabilities of Photosynth. I intend to explore it more so I can create fuller environments.

I've also created a panorama based on the images I used for the Photosynth. Click below to see it much larger:

Jordan Bridge Panorama

Obviously, it's not really curved like that, but so it goes with panoramas.

Bright & Cheery

Bright & Cheery - The Jordan Bridge in Stayton Oregon

It's time once again for my periodic post of my favorite Stayton landmark, the Jordan Bridge, a covered bridge which resides in Pioneer Park.

Those with too much time on their hands can view the various other photos I've taken of the bridge.

Jordan Bridge

Jordan Bridge - a covered bridge in Stayton Oregon

Okay, yes, I am posting yet another photo of the Jordan Bridge. But, see, the weather has been rather icky the last handful of days, so I haven't been able to go out and taken any photos... that means I had to fall back on one I took a week ago, when I was chasing a squirrel through Pioneer Park.

I've started a post category just for Jordan Bridge photos, if you're interested.

A Reflection Of Reality

A Reflection Of Reality - the Stayton-Jordan Bridge reflected in water in Stayton Oregon

A Reflection Of Reality II - the Stayton-Jordan Bridge reflected in water in Stayton OregonWe had an almost spring-like day yesterday, so I went to Pioneer Park to take some pictures. The photo above shows the reflection of the Jordan Bridge being reflected in the water below it. The only parts of the photo which aren't a reflection is the grass on the upper right and some of the branches on the left.

At right is the same photo flipped so the bridge is right side up. Click on it to see a bigger version of the photo.

Lead On

Lead On - The Jordan Bridge in Stayton Oregon

This is my alternate photo for yesterday's city daily photo theme day, which was "what your city is known for." My first instinct was to go with the Stayton-Jordan Bridge (pictured above), but the cannery I featured yesterday has been a part of the community (1924) much longer than the bridge (late 1980's). And I'd posted a photo of the bridge for a theme day a couple of months ago, so doing it again might have been a bit of an overkill.

But I love the bridge, so I tend to gravitate to it a lot. In my mind, when I think of Stayton, I think of the bridge. A bit of history can be found on Oregon.com

Another Visit To The Jordan Bridge

The Jordan Bridge in Stayton Oregon

The Jordan Bridge in Stayton OregonYesterday, I headed back to my favorite subject to photograph, the Jordan Bridge at Pioneer Park. And since I couldn't decide which photo to post, today is a double-feature. Click on the thumbnail at right to see a bigger version of that photo.

Consider this a break from all the autumn leaves photos I've been posting. Yes, I realize there are leaves in the photo, but they're not the primary focus. Tomorrow, though... I'm not making any promises. It's likely today's photo will just be... er, a bridge to from one fall leaves photo to another.

(Carla, who commented a couple of days ago that she likes my bad puns -- the horrible pun above was for you! ;) )

By The Light Of The Bridge

By The Light Of The Bridge - Stayton-Jordan Bridge at night in Stayton Oregon

In my night wanderings around town, I went by one of my favorite subjects, the Jordan Bridge at Pioneer Park, and snapped the above. I thought about cropping it, but I like the off-center placement. I guess I can identify with being off-center. ;)

Covere Bridge (Yes, Again)

Jordan Bridge - A Covered Bridge in Stayton Oregon

Frequent visitors may recognize this bridge, Jordan Bridge in Pioneer Park, since I've posted it once or twice. Or possibly five or six. Or maybe more. Anyway, it was time for yet another view.

So here's another view. And I just realized I have a thing for bridges. Not just this bridge, but bridges in general. But that's okay. I can live with it.

X

X - Side view of the Jordan Bridge in Stayton Oregon

It's time again for me to give into my compulsion to post a photo of the very nifty Jordan Bridge, the covered bridge at Pioneer Park. The photo above is of some cross beams on the side of the bridge, and some rod things.

Thus concludes my periodic compulsive Jordan Bridge post.

The Lights of Jordan Bridge

The Lights of Jordan Bridge in Stayton Oregon

It's been awhile since I last posted a photo of Jordan Bridge, a covered bridge which resides at Pioneer Park. The other day was the first time I'd seen its lights turned on. I guess maybe I should look up more often.

I assume they turn them on at night, and it was near dusk when I took the photo. The lights created a nice effect on an otherwise dreary day.

Oregon Covered Bridge Festival

An antique Dodge by Jordan Bridge in Stayton Oregon

This weekend is the Oregon Covered Bridge Festival at Pioneer Park in Stayton, put on by the Covered Bridge Society of Oregon. People come from all over to visit the park's own Stayton-Jordan Bridge, take a covered bridge bus tour, learn more about the history of Oregon's covered bridges, and so on. The photo above shows an antique Dodge sitting in front of Stayton-Jordan Bridge.

There were facts about covered bridges posted throughout the festival, so I thought I'd share.
  • Oregon once had 600 covered bridge, and now only 51 remain
  • As late as 1959, Linn County, Oregon, had 15 covered bridges. Today there are only eight.
  • The Stayton-Jordan Bridge weighs 160,000 pounds (72,727 kilograms).
  • The longest covered bridge is 1,242 feet (378 meters) long in Hartland, New Brunswick.
I'll be featuring another photo from the festival tomorrow. In the meantime, check out the Flickr photo set I've made of the event.

Just hanging out

Kids playing on Jordan Bridge in Stayton Oregon

The Jordan Bridge at Pioneer Park in Stayton is a great place to hang out. Weddings are held there, as are bridge card games, picnics, etc., and the Annual Covered Bridge Festival. To me, though, it's just a nifty place to stand and look out over the park or the water. It's also a lovely place to photograph.

Welcome

This is the first post in what I hope to be a daily blog featuring interesting sites in and around the Willamette Valley, in Oregon, USA. The Valley spreads between Portland and Eugene (more or less), and is nestled between two mountain ranges, the Cascades and the Coastal Range.

Jordan Bridge - Stayton Oregon covered bridge park

This first photo was taken at Pioneer Park, in Stayton, which is about 15 miles SE of Salem, our state capitol. It features the Jordan Bridge, a covered bridge which was transplanted from nearby Linn County. You can read more about its move, subsequent fire, and rebuilding at Oregon.com.
