Heading For Stranger Tides
May 20th
I went to the midnight showing of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides last night at the Star Cinema. I loved the movie, so ignore all those reviews you may have seen (check out Rotten Tomatoes – as of this writing, critics gave it a 37% favorable rating, while the audience rating is at 82%), and go watch it. You won’t regret it, savvy?
This photo was taken just as they opened the doors to the theater.
A Night At The Cinema
Apr 12th
It’s been a while (almost a year, in fact) since I last posted a photo of Stayton’s beautiful movie theater, the Star Cinema on 3rd Ave. So here’s another. To see previously posted photos, visit the ‘star cinema’ tag below.
If you’re interested in learning the history of the theater, visit their web site and click on ‘history.’ It’s really quite interesting.
A Night At The Theater
Mar 28th
I went to go see “How To Train Your Dragon” 3D last night at the Star Cinema, so I took a picture on the way out. That just might be my scooter at the bottom left of the photo.
The Star just upgraded their screen and projector for the full 3D experience, and “Dragon” is the first to be show there in 3D. That’s pretty awesome, especially since it’s a small one-screen movie theater. The owners of the theater, Jeff and Robin Mexico, do an amazing job running the theater.
For the record — I loved the movie. Go see it, with or without children.

Last night a benefit concert was held at the Star Cinema for Ken Cartwright, in order to help pay for some medical bills associated with some recent health problems. Ken, for those who don’t know, has done quite a lot for the Stayton area community, including organizing free concerts, running a community-based radio station, and many other things. It was great to see the community give something back to someone who has given so much.
The concert was hosted by local artist Paul Toews, and singer/comedian Joe Stoddard and the bluegrass band Old Circle performed. Stoddard did a variety of music, and did humorous impersonations of several artists, including Elvis and John Denver. Old Circle featured a 15-year-old young lady named Amy Hakanson on the fiddle who was more than kept up with musicians who’d been playing longer than she’s been alive.
I’ve uploaded several photos from the concert (with descriptions) to a Flickr photoset. I hope you’ll have a look.
As of this writing, there is information on how to donate to Ken and more info about the concert on the Star Cinema’s web site.

Neon Star
May 6th
I went to the Star Cinema last night to see “Iron Man” (which I loved). While I was there, I took the opportunity to take another photo of the vintage neon sign outside the theater. Part of the lettering wasn’t lit, so I focused on the star and overall colorful nature of the sign instead.
By the way, a big hello to the nice folks I met outside the theater, who asked if I run Stayton Daily Photo. It was good to meet you.

I’ve posted a photo or two (okay, three) of the neon sign on the Star Cinema before, but it’s so cool, I’m doing it again. The flag behind the sign is at the police station, which sits right next door to the Star.
I really need to go back at night when it’s lit and take more photos. I shall do that someday soon, when it’s not so cold at night.
Other photos I’ve posted of the Star:
