Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss
Mar 5th
March 3rd was the birthday of Dr. Seuss, and the Stayton Public Library celebrated with cake and stories. Guest photographer John Brandt, his wife (above), and others joined in to celebrate the day.
More photos — click on each of them to be taken to John’s Flickr photo pages to see each photo larger:

Volunteer Ruth McWayne reads “Thidwicke the Moose”

Public Works Kinney reads “Green Eggs and Ham”

Police Chief Stebens reads “Hop on Pop”
Thanks, John, and to everyone else in involved.
What Happens When You Let Nature Do The Landscaping
Aug 23rd
Guest photographer John Brandt took today’s photo (click on the photo to be taken to his Flickr photo page with more information). His description:
This is the strip between the library parking lot and the small cluster of businesses to the north. Nearly everything here is invasive (check notes) and the natives are all volunteer. I didn’t see any English ivy or Himalayan blackberries but I bet it’s there. I’d expect a feral cat population has colonized a space like this. Just to the left of this photo is a set of steps that takes local walkers from the parking lot to the upper businesses.
I can’t tell one plant from another, let alone what is and is not native, so this is extra interesting to me. Thanks, John.

This is a panorama of the front of the public library and the surrounding area, which mainly consists of a parking lot. If you click on the links above, you can see both the Photosynth (a quasi-3D environment using photos) plus the large size of the panorama.
Stayton Public Library Expansion Birthday Party
Jul 13th
Yesterday was the first birthday party of the expansion to the Stayton Public Library. They had cake (yum), ice cream (more yum), face painting, and a bouncy castle thing for the kids.
Visit my Flickr photoset of the event for pictures of some of the Library Foundation members, Dave from StaytonEvents.com, various party-goers, balloons, face painting of adorable children, and more.
Note to Greg: the photos of your incredibly cute grandkids are available in original size on Flickr, if you want to download them.
Stayton Public Library
Jul 12th
Today between 2 and 4pm, the Stayton Public Library Foundation is hosting a 1st birthday party of the expansion which was completed last year. The photo above was used on a postcard the Foundation sent out to folks to promote the party.
I’ll be at the party for at least a few minutes (gotta take some photos, of course), if the heat doesn’t kill me off first. Hope to see you there.

Kickin’ It Old Skool
Dec 29th
Now listen here, youngsters, I’m going to tell you a story. Back in my day, we didn’t have computers. No, sir, we had these things called typewriters. No spell-check, no fancy fonts, just good old fashioned words on good old fashioned paper! And we were thankful for it, yes we were.
We had to carry our typewriters on our backs to and from school every single day in the sleet and blinding snow, but you didn’t hear us complain. It built character! That’s right, big hunks of metal strapped to our backs. We didn’t have laptops, we had backtops! We are permanently hunched over now, but it was worth it, let me tell you.
But now, all you youngsters have your computers, and nobody has to think, and you just zip off your messages to your friends, you ungrateful good-for-nothing kids without hunchbacks. And don’t get me started on texting! Nobody can spell a darned thing these days.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go to the public library where they know the value of a good typewriter (pictured above), and I’m going to write honest to goodness letters, not that anyone ever writes me back. Use email, they say. We don’t write letters anymore, they say. Well, I’ll show them, those spoiled little punks.
merry-go-round 1b
Dec 17th
Today’s photo is of a page from a rather large dictionary at the public library. It was helpfully open to a cute little picture of a merry-go-round.
I can’t remember the last time I used an actual dictionary, since it’s much easier to look things up on dictionary.com. My unabridged dictionary is being used to weigh down a dehumidifier to keep it from squeaking. There’s some sort of social commentary in there somewhere, but I don’t want to think too hard about it.
Holiday In Library Land
Dec 10th
The public library has a lot of nifty holiday decorations on display, which made it rather difficult to choose just one photo for today’s post. It required me to think, after all, and that never goes well. So I decided to just go with a mosaic.
To see each photo individually (the mosaic cropped the photos to a square format), please use the links below:
